Setbacks That Athletes Can Encounter and How To Overcome Them

The average athlete looks at setbacks as obstacles while elite athletes look at them as learning experiences. Michael Jordan was cut from his basketball team in high school then went on to become one of the greatest athletes of all time. This type of resilience is quite common in those athletes that are performing at a high level consistently. Keeping a positive attitude in the face of adversity is important and there are certain ways to react to different situations. The following are setbacks athletes encounter as well as some tips to overcoming these setbacks.

Benched For Another Player

Being benched for another player happens from time to time whether it is simply your style of play does not match up well with the opposing team or the coach does not like your style of play. What you need to do is not to pout or lose your temper but rather schedule a meeting with the coach to discuss you being benched. This might illuminate certain areas of your game that you need to improve. There is a chance that the coach will not start you regardless so keep this in mind. If you are a talented player regardless of sport there will be plenty of coaches that will start you. Do not think of this as abandoning your team but rather trying to maximize your talent and opportunities to showcase that talent.

Wisdom Teeth

At one point or another an athlete is going to have to have their wisdom teeth removed. This should be planned in the offseason when possible if the teeth are not impacted thus moving other teeth in the mouth. A reliable dentist like the ones at https://macleodtraildental.ca/ will let you know when you will be feeling 100 percent again. One thing to remember is to use the pain medication that they give you in the appropriate way. The last thing you want to come out of a wisdom tooth extraction is a dependence on painkillers as this is the way many people end up addicted to opiates.

Severe Injury

Getting injured is one thing but an injury like a torn ACL can be devastating to an athlete. Once the knee is recovered there could be a tentative nature of play due to fear of being injured again. The best thing that you can do is rehab the injury daily and do everything that your physical therapist recommends. There are injuries that are from overuse like a torn rotator cuff in a baseball pitcher. You will still need to rehab this injury but once you are healthy you need to do preventative exercises. With these types of injuries you need to know when to stop and recover rather than push through the pain. An athlete needs to understand the difference between pushing themselves through discomfort due to fatigue and pushing through pain. Pain is a sign that you need to slow down and take it easy as the last thing anyone wants is to be sidelined due to injury.

Setbacks allow athletes to take a look at what they are doing to see where they can improve and learn from the setback. What setbacks have you had to overcome?
